Looking up the slope above the river from Brno Exhibition Centre, it is hard to guess that a small settlement with an entirely different scale is hidden there. Kamenná kolonie, known locally as Kamenka, grew in a former quarry and still feels like a world inserted between the city, rock and greenery.
Kamenka is often associated with a creative community and alternative culture, but it should not be reduced to a simple label. Its character comes from the area's history, affordable housing, neighbourly relationships and gradual change. Some houses remain modest; others have been substantially altered. Old and new meet without a single architectural plan. This irregularity is precisely what makes the place valuable. It reveals a Brno that was not built as a representative façade, but as an answer to the specific needs of people and terrain. Look closely and you will see much more than picturesque little houses.
If a public cultural or neighbourhood event is taking place during your visit, check who organises it and what rules apply. A public programme can be a chance to discover the area through people who actually use it. It does not, however, give visitors permission to wander outside the designated space. Buy a ticket, support the refreshments or organisation and respect the finishing time. The healthiest relationship between a sensitive place and its visitors develops when guests give something back instead of only taking photographs.
Kamenka is a useful test of how we travel. If we need a major attraction, a sign and a precisely marked photo point, it may seem understated. If we care about the structure of a city, everyday life and places that retain their own rhythm, it is extraordinary. Arrive without a noisy group, walk slowly and leave in the same manner. Leave behind only a mark on your map and a few photographs taken with respect. The reward is not the feeling that you conquered something, but that Brno briefly revealed one of its most delicate layers.
